La Maison de l’Ecluse
“The Lock Keepers Cottage”
Jarnac – France

La Maison de l’Ecluse is located in a secluded corner of the pretty city of Jarnac, some 450 kms. south west of Paris and about 100 kms north of Bordeaux, with its 4000 Wine Chateaux. The TGV – the worlds fastest train, takes just 2 hours from Paris to Angouleme, 20 kms away and the local train station is just 900 metres from the cottage.

The town has a population of about 4,500 and is situated on the lower reaches of the Charente River. Francois Premier, the King of France from 1494 -1542 and born in nearby Cognac, described ‘La Charente’ as the “prettiest river in my kingdom”.

Jarnac is also the birth place of famous French president Francois Mitterand. A museum on his life and times is only several hundred metres away on the other side of the river, his grave is in the local cemetery nearby. The historic Courvoisier Cellars are even closer and guided tours can show you why Napoleon loved their Cognac so much, many other Cognac producers, large and small, are nearby and welcome visits.

The Atlantic coastline is less than an hour away and you can visit France’s most famous oyster beds at Marenne.

The Locks were placed on the river during the last Century and the lock keepers cottage was built in 1837. Some 30 years ago the locks were changed to enable boats travelling on the river to operate themselves.

The cottage is on its own Island and also looks out over the lock to the beautiful Jarnac public gardens. Although the location is very quiet and private, you are less than 5 minutes walk across a footbridge to the gorgeous town square, shops, banks, post office etc.

There are some fabulous walking tracks along the river which is overhung by statuesque trees. It is so green and peaceful and the water is crystal clear. If you don’t feel like doing too much you can just sit back on the flagstone terrace under the weeping willow tree and wile away the time watching the boats of all shapes and sizes quietly come through the lock.

The cottage consists of two large lounge rooms, with a large open fire, a cosy dining room with wooden beams and a bright airy kitchen. All of these rooms open out through french doors onto the terrace. There is a double sofa bed in one of the lounge rooms.

Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with two single beds and one with its own ensuite bathroom which has a double bed, single bed and a trundle bed. There is also a separate bathroom. In all, the Property can sleep eight people. Shuttered windows look out on the river both sides, plus the lock and civic gardens.

“It’s a little piece of paradise” .
